Dr. Cargen gets a relevant history from the owner and performs a physical examination on the pet. The cost is $40 for the first pet, and $35 for subsequent pets of the same owner. An exam is required for all new clients, and for all vaccines and acute services. Maintenance services (nail clipping, anal gland expression) and follow-up chiropractic adjustments do not require an exam fee.

After the initial services of puppy vaccinations at age 2-4 months, dogs should get an annual kennel cough (Bordetella) vaccine and a DHLPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza & Parvovirus) vaccine. A rabies vaccine is required 1 year after the puppy vaccinations and then every 3 years. Proof of rabies vaccination is provided.

Influenza vaccines are not routinely recommended; however, they are usually required by boarding facilities. You should also consider the vaccine if your dog is routinely exposed to many other animals including at dog parks, assisted living facilities etc. Lyme disease vaccines should only be given to very outdoorsy dogs who do a lot of nature hiking etc.

Although more Americans have cats as pets compared to dogs, they are much less likely to take cats to the veterinarian, and consequently many cats do not get the routine wellness care that they require. After the initial services of kitten vaccinations at age 2-4 months, cats should get a Feline Leukemia as well as a FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia) at 1-3 year intervals. A rabies vaccine is required 1 year after the kitten vaccinations and then every 3 years. Proof of rabies vaccination is provided. Note that Multnomah County requires owners to have proof of rabies vaccination!

This plan includes 3 home visits by Dr. Cargen and includes comprehensive wellness exams and vaccine administration. At 2 months of age the puppy is given a DAPP (Distemper, Adenovirus, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus) as well as a Bordetella (kennel cough) vaccine. Four weeks later, a DHLPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus) vaccine is given. At the final visit at 4 months of age, DHLPP and Rabies vaccines are administered. Proof of rabies vaccination is provided.

Examples of this include heartworm and flea & tick control.

Dr. Cargen was a certified veterinary technician for 10 years prior to becoming a veterinarian, and she is very proficient in venipuncture and phlebotomy. Our practice offers the full spectrum of diagnostic laboratory evaluation:

  • Canine Heartworm Tests (recommended annually)
  • Fecal tests (sometimes required by boarding facilities)
  • Chemistry panels, including liver, kidney, pancreas and thyroid tests
  • Culture and Sensitivity
  • Complete Blood Chemistry
  • Cytology

This is only a partial list of the labs that we offer. Prices for the common tests are listed on our website; prices include interpretation by Dr. Cargen and a follow-up phone call. Due to the sheer number of tests that are potentially available it is not possible to list all the prices on our site. An explanation of the necessity of each test, as well as a complete written estimate of all diagnostic tests to be ordered will be provided by Dr. Cargen before any work is started.

We provide health certificates for domestic travel within the United States for $35 (in addition to an examination fee and a trip fee if applicable). Please contact us for information regarding travel to Hawaii or international locations.

This is a service that we offer only to our clients, we are NOT an online store to purchase prescription food and other products. It is not uncommon for veterinary practices to offer online sales through their website. However, these are typically just links to a large online veterinary supply store; the practice gets a commission for referral, but the clients don’t save any money. This type of business model is not consistent with our core philosophy of providing value to our clients with every service that we provide.

Dr. Cargen has 25 years of experience with Hill’s Pet nutrition and is extremely knowledgeable about the various lines of prescription dog and cat food that they carry. We purchase our prescription foods directly from the manufacturer and are therefore able to pass savings on to our clients. We always sell our prescription foods at 15% below the suggested retail price of the manufacturer! We are happy to provide prescriptions for any food or other products that we do not carry in stock or cannot order from the manufacturer.

If you have any questions about our services, please contact us today at (503) 896-8997.
